The party stepped into the doorway and the world changes around them. They find themselves before a chessboard and several chess piece itself. They could feel the winds of magic flowing differently in this plane of existence and knew some forms of magic do not work here. The participants must abide by the rules of the game....
RULES
- Wislan's chess functions similarly to real chess game. Each type of chess piece has its own movements.
- A piece is captured (or taken) when an attacking enemy piece replaces it on its square.
- Castling is not in play in Wislan's Chess.
- The Chess Piece are actually Chess Golems
Turn Sequence
There are no initiative at all. One side can only move one piece at a time. Once a player/side has moved, then it is the other player/side's turn. This repeats until the game has ended.
Movement
- Each Square is assumed to be 5'
- Each chess piece has its own movements. King, Rook, Pawn, Bishop, Knight & Queen.
- Player characters must take a role from the above and they move accordingly but unlike the Chess Golems, they are limited by how far the character can actually move.
- They are also limited by the movement of the Chess Piece's role they take on. Example: If a character can move 30' (6 Squares), they can only move 5' or 10' (1 or 2 Squares) if they take on the role of a Pawn.
Capturing
- A chess golem captures when attacking an enemy piece and replaces its square. The enemy piece is automatically removed from play immediately.
- Player characters interact with Chess Golems in a much different way.
- If a player assumes the role of a chess piece and successfully captures an enemy piece, the enemy piece is not automatically removed. They enter combat and keep fighting until either side is destroyed. The combat continues each turn even if the side did not choose to move that Chess Piece. Vice Versa for Chess Piece capturing a Player.
- No two piece can gang up on another.
- The Capturing Piece gains the following advantages:
- Attacks with Advantage
- Gains resistance against damage dealt by the Captured Piece
- Gains advantage on saving throw vs effects issued by the Captured Piece
- The Captured Piece has the following disadvantages
- Attacks with Disadvantage
- Gains vulnerability towards damage dealt by the Capturing Piece
- Gains disadvantage on their saving throws vs effects issued by the Capturing Piece
Area of Effect Abilities
Area effect abilities follow the exact same rules as above, depending on whether the one who activated the ability is a Capturing Piece or a Captured Piece. Chess Pieces that are not being Captured has the following advantages
- Gains resistance against damage dealt by the piece that activates the ability
- Gains advantage on saving throw vs effects issued by the piece that activates the ability
- Attack rolls against it are made with a disadvantage
Magical Effects
- No creatures can be summoned within the Chessboard
- No Illusions will work within the Chessboard
- No creatures can be charmed within the Chessboard. This means spells such as hypnotic pattern, sleep, charm person, suggestions will not work.
- Spells affect the terrain will not work on the Chessboard either
- Polymorph can be used to transform one Chess Piece to another Chess Piece. But otherwise, it does not work the same way it normally does.
Attacking those not within your Chess Piece's reach
- See Area of Effect Abilities
Breaking the Rules
Because player characters are not chess piece and have abilities that defy the rules of the game. The following can occur
- If a player character moves more than its allowed movement as that Chess Piece. They suffer 10 damage for every square moved. This damage cannot be resisted in any way, shape or form. Example: A rogue with 30' movement moving 6 squares instead of only 2 squares allowed as a Pawn
- If a player character moves in a way that is not allowed by that Chess Piece, they also suffer 10 damage for every square moved. This damage cannot be resisted in any way, shape or form. Example: A Knight instead of moving 4 Squares as an L. Moves 6 Squares in any other direction.
- Forcibly moving an enemy Chess Piece is also illegal. If an enemy Chess Piece is moved from where it is supposed to be by the actions of the player character. The player character takes 10 damage from every square that the Chess Piece has been moved. Example: Grappling/moving a Chess Piece from one Square to another. Eldritch blast pushing or pulling the Chess Piece from one square to another.
Out of Board
A chess piece that is forced out of the board is automatically destroyed.
Promotion
A pawn that reaches the eight rank is promoted to a queen. This can only happen if there are no queen left on that side. In other words, there can be only one Queen.
There can be only.. one or two?
There are no limits on how many player character can be pawns. But there are limit of two Knights, two Rook, two Bishops, one Queen and one King. If a Knight has been destroyed, a pawn can become a knight via promotion or polymorph spell.
Victory Conditions
A side wins if they capture or defeats the King from the opposing side.
